Discover Palmer's Woodworking and Mr. Winkelman

Woodworking class is a great opportunity for our students to learn the craft of cutting and building objects using wood. Mr. Winkelman, our woodworking instructor, had given us insights into what we can expect in this class.

In the class, the primary focus is on creating various objects, from small trinkets to functional furniture like end tables. Students begin with a simple piece of wood and transform it into a finished product through a step-by-step process. The best part about it is that you get to take your creations home!

Safety is a top priority in the woodshop. He shared past incidents where students had minor accidents due to not listening to rules. However, these accidents occurred around a decade ago, and the class has been completely fine since.

There’s no special skills required for the class. Instead, learning the various woodworking machines correctly will be required. For instance, the router allows you to carve out unique shapes into wood, but adjusting it properly is crucial for precision. Additionally, using safety tools like push sticks and following the safety protocols is critical for keeping your fingers “alive”.

While the class only has 17 or 18 students last year, this year has been increased massively, having around 23. This could lead to sometimes a student might have to wait a while to use machines.
